4 Reasons Why QR Asset Tags are the Best Asset Tracking Tools

QR Asset TagsQR asset tags are a modern and convenient way of tracking assets in an institution, organisation or business. However, not many Ugandans are aware of this fact. Most customers we get for engraving services opt for direct engraving on the assets. A few choose to use asset tags. And very few consider using barcode asset tags.

Most people in Uganda go for direct engraving because they believe it’s the best theft deterrent. They think that when they attach an asset tag on a property, it’s easy for thieves to remove. They feel that the property is safer with direct engraving on it. Secondly, it’s because that’s what they’re used to seeing around them and feel comfortable with it. Thirdly, they find direct engraving comparatively cheaper.

However, direct engraving limits you on the information you put on the asset. It can only be either an identification number or a business name. But if you want a method that will contain more information than just an identification number and name, you need to mark your property with tags. In this post, I am going to share with you the benefits of using QR asset tags.

What are QR Asset Tags?

Before I dive into the advantages of using QR asset tags, let us first understand what they are. Recently, I wrote extensively about QR code marketing, in which I explained the meaning of QR codes. If you missed this post, don’t worry. Let me repeat it here for you.

The term “QR code” is a short form for “Quick Response Codes”. It’s a machine-readable code that consists of black and white squares, which people use to store information that is readable with the help of the camera of a smartphone.  So QR asset tags are tags that consist of data stored in the QR codes. To read the information, you have to use a QR Code Scan App, which you download on your smartphone.

What are the Benefits of QR Asset Tags?

Now that you have a clear idea of what QR asset tags are let’s now look at the benefits of using them in tracking or managing your assets. They include the following:

#1 – Storage of more information

QR asset tags store more than just serial numbers, business names and prices. You can add a lot of valuable information you wish to save on your asset tag. It’s not possible with direct engraving or barcode asset tags. With direct engraving, you can put a serial number and a company name. Even with barcode tags, there is a limit to how much information you can store on them.

#2 – Easily readable by cell phones

Reading information stored on QR asset tags is so easy as long as you have a smartphone. Any person can scan the code to get the data with a smartphone. It’s not the case with standard barcodes. With standard barcodes, you need to have a scanner to read the data.

Secondly, scanning the codes is so easy in any direction you are. You can scan with your phone facing left or right, up or down without having any difficulties.

#3 – Keep costs low

QR asset codes are cost-effective because when you use them, you eliminate the huge costs of buying scanners to record inventory transactions. In Uganda, good scanners currently range from UGX 900,000 to UGX 1,200,000. That’s a lot of money. But if you use QR asset tags, you do away with that big cost.

#4 – Hide information

They see checkered boxes and don’t bother to find out more about them because they don’t know. One may even think that it’s an industrial label that came with the asset. It could be so helpful in netting thieves.
