Starting a small home business is suitable for working towards financial security. All living human beings have problems. And most people’s issues are related to money. At times you admire those with good jobs while they also admire those with personal businesses. It’s quite confusing. But one thing I discovered is that financial freedom is not obtainable through working for others.
The challenge is that we got wrongly socialised? Our parents, teachers, relatives and other people in our societies told us to read hard so that we could get a good job to become financially well-off. But the truth is that most Ugandans haven’t yet obtained financial freedom. They have degrees, but they don’t have money. Those who earn big salaries are not sure of what they will be tomorrow. Doesn’t it sound ridiculous?
In Uganda, there is an increasing number of educated working people who lose their integrity through fraudulent means. But even when they steal money, they end up spending it luxuriously without investing it. Do you know why? They don’t have the entrepreneurial acumen to make money. It’s why I say that you should start your own small home business now, not only to supplement your income but also to become financially secure.
Each day, people run up and down looking for money. Those with jobs are worried about being retrenched at any time. If the fear of losing their jobs does not preoccupy them, then their problem is that they don’t have the freedom to manage their working life. If not, the salary they earn is too small to meet their financial obligations. I always ask myself, “Where shall we end?” Is there anyone to get us the solution? I don’t think so. Each one of us has to find the answer to the financial problem he/she has. My advice to you, employed people, is to start your own small home business.
Why Start a Small Home Business?
I am a fervent advocate of small home businesses because of the following reasons:
#1 – Convenient to Employed People
A small home business is so convenient for working people. You can afford to work on your business after work and at weekends. I started my small home business and operated it alongside my full-time job.
#2 – Teaches Entrepreneurial Skills to Children
Marketing Skills
When you start a small home business, you make it possible to teach a spirit of entrepreneurship in your children so that they, too, can start their businesses as opposed to looking for jobs and work for others. The jobs are becoming scarce now and again. Even if there are more jobs created, working for others is not a solution to financial insecurity. It’s a short answer to a problem.
Your children will learn from your entrepreneurial skills, how to make money and their mind will be unlocked to think better and to grab opportunities that come their way in life. These aspects are hardly obtainable in school. Ugandan schools tend to orient your children to study, get a job and work for others. But I would like you to change that mindset. Change it now because it has become a significant roadblock to most people and the reason why some of the most educated people have remained poor. Your children should learn to make money and let them learn it from you, the parent.
#3 – Offers an Opportunity to Learn Entrepreneurial Skills
There are many successful people I know, and you also know who started their businesses from their homes and gradually grew them into great companies around the world. It’s easy to start a small home business and grow it into a business empire over time.
#4 – Little Capital Is Needed
Home businesses are less costly to start and more convenient to manage. If you work from home, it is easier to minimise your costs and maximise your profits.
#5 – Offers an Opportunity To Pull Out of Formal Employment
You can slowly begin to grow your asset column and eventually, you stop working for others and start earning from your assets.
#6 – Engages Your Family in Profitable Activities
A home business engages you and your family members in meaningful activities. I know many people who, after work, spend most of their time in bars until their salaries get finished and they settle. They keep themselves in perpetual poverty, and at the end of their working life, they have nothing to show. Besides, they leave no legacy to inspire others. Why not spend your time working to earn extra income from home instead of ruining your life with alcohol?
What Does It Take To Start your Small Home Business?
Starting a small home business does not require as much in terms of capital as most people think. When you ask someone to start a business, many will give excuses for not having the capital or enough capital. What they call capital in many cases is paper money. They forget that they have the brain, the skills, the knowledge, the friends and God created everything a human being needs to live. Secondly, they forget that we live in a world of problems. Whether poor or rich, each one of us has issues. Problems are not only for the poor. Even the rich have them. But you can turn people’s problems into great opportunities. Just look around you!
Let me share with you what you need to start your own home business. I will not mention money because money shouldn’t be the first thing to think about when you want to start a small home business. Besides, you go into business primarily to make money not because you have it. If you had money (usually referred to as capital), you wouldn’t need to go into business at all. Thinking about funds first limits your ability to do something. If you want to start your small home business, begin by thinking about the following:
#1 – Have an Idea
What can you do and do it uniquely? How can you do it? What does it take to do it? Start from there to probe further into the idea, and your mind will give you the answers. Remember that it’s you to push forward your business idea, to believe in it and to make it work. You may encounter obstacles along the way, but you need to be courageous enough to push it further until you achieve what you want.
#2 – Have the Will
It’s the strong desire you have to follow your business idea. It’s the passion, the enthusiasm you have to pursue your business idea up to the end. Without it, you can never start a small home business.
#3 – Have Determination
Dr Robert Schuller once said that “Great people are ordinary people with extraordinary amounts of determination”. To be an extraordinary person, you must be determined to carry through with your idea, no matter what happens. Say to yourself that no matter what happens, I have to succeed. You will indeed succeed.
#4 – Be Courageous
Courage gives you the strength to tackle any problem. For instance, have the courage to speak to people to lend you money for startup capital. Alternatively, explore government programs and see where you can take advantage to succeed with your idea.
When I wanted to build a house to live in, I had the strong will to have my own home. I had the determination to build a house with the rigours of buying land, saving part of my small salary and borrowing to build the house for seven years. I dared to contact the people I wanted to seek support from, and I finally made my dream house.
In another example, I had a strong will to start my own small home business. Yes, we started our engraving business from home. It became a full-time business after leaving formal employment.
Conclusion
As an ardent advocate of small home businesses, I always encourage others to think little to build capacity for turning your business into a vast empire. Starting from home offers you the opportunity to learn how to run your business without wasting your hard-earned resources.
