To do this, select the photo and click on\u00a0Bitmap<\/em><\/strong> > Edit Bitmap <\/em><\/strong>to open the picture in Photo-Paint<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Open Edit Bitmap<\/p><\/div>\n Photo-Paint<\/p><\/div>\n With your image opened in Photo-Paint, click on Image<\/em><\/strong> and select Cutout Lab <\/em><\/strong>from the dropdown list to be redirected to where you\u2019ll edit the image.<\/p>\n Open Cutout Lab<\/p><\/div>\n Thirdly, click on the Highlighter Tool<\/em><\/strong>. You can adjust the thickness of the Highlighter Tool<\/em><\/strong> by adjusting the Nib size<\/strong> in the Tool Options<\/em><\/strong>. You can also change the Highlighter colour and fill colour to make them more visible. In the preview window, draw a line along the edges of the image area you want to cut out.<\/p>\n Highlighter Selected<\/p><\/div>\n Highlight the Image<\/p><\/div>\n Cutout Refilled<\/p><\/div>\n Fourthly, click on Inside Fill Tool<\/em><\/strong>, and then click inside the area of the image you want to cut out. Click on Preview button to view the cutout with the background removed.<\/p>\n Photo Background Removed<\/p><\/div>\n Add Remove Detail<\/p><\/div>\n Fifthly, use the Add Detail tool<\/em><\/strong> to bring back the deleted parts along the edges of the image and the Remove Detail tool<\/em><\/strong> to delete the unwanted detail along the edges of the image. From the Cutout results, select Cutout<\/em><\/strong> and click Ok<\/strong>. Then click on Save<\/em><\/strong> in Photo-Paint<\/strong> to save the edited image on your CorelDraw working page (refer to Photograph 2)<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n Photograph 2: Background Removed<\/p><\/div>\n Having edited the image to remove the unwanted background, we now move to the second step. This step is resampling, which means changing the pixel dimensions of the image. When you downsample, you\u2019re eliminating pixels, and when you upsample, you add pixels.<\/p>\n To prepare photos<\/strong> for engraving, we need to increase the pixels so that all the details of the image are visible for the laser engraver to identify them. To resample, select the photo and then click on Bitmap<\/em><\/strong>. In the dropdown list, choose Resample<\/em><\/strong> to open the Resample Palette<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n Select Resample<\/p><\/div>\n With the\u00a0Resample Palette <\/em><\/strong>opened, you can change the image size<\/strong> and the resolution<\/strong>. In our case, we are adjusting the image size to 5 inches in width, which automatically changes the height to 3.7 inches. As for the resolution, change it to 600 dpi<\/strong> and click Ok<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Resample Palette Opened<\/p><\/div>\n The third important step as you manually prepare photos for engraving is gamma adjustment. The Gamma effect enables you to reveal all the details of the picture without compromising its quality.<\/p>\n Adjust Gamma<\/p><\/div>\n Gamma Adjustment Made<\/p><\/div>\n With your photo selected, open the Gamma Adjustment Palette<\/em><\/strong> by clicking Effects > Adjust\u00a0 > \u00a0Gamma. <\/em><\/strong>In the Gamma Palette<\/em><\/strong>, change the Gamma value<\/strong> to 3.5 as in the image above and click Ok<\/strong>. It will change the image by brightening it to bring out the detail in the dark areas as in Photograph 3<\/em><\/strong> below.<\/p>\n Photograph 3: Photo Changes after Gamma Adjustment<\/p><\/div>\n To prepare photos<\/strong> for engraving, the Unsharp Mask filter is a key element you must not skip. Unsharp Masking is an image sharpening<\/a> technique that brings out the edge detail of the photo. To unsharp mask, the image, select the photo. With your photo selected, click on Bitmap<\/em><\/strong>. In the dropdown list, select Sharpen<\/em><\/strong> and then Unsharp Mask<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n Select Unsharp Mask<\/p><\/div>\n In the Unsharp Mask Palette, enter the following values:<\/p>\n Unsharp Mask Opened<\/p><\/div>\n Finally, click the OK<\/strong> button and the results you will get will be like in Photograph 4<\/em><\/strong> below.<\/p>\n Photograph 4: Unsharp Effect Applied<\/p><\/div>\n Select Sharpen Filter<\/p><\/div>\n This filter accentuates the edges of the image by concentrating on the blurred areas to increase the contrast between neighbouring pixels. With your photo selected, click on Bitmap. In the dropdown list, select Sharpen<\/em><\/strong> and then Sharpen<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n In the Sharpen Filter Palette, enter the following values:<\/p>\n Sharpen Filter Palette<\/p><\/div>\n After entering the sharpening filter values above, click the OK<\/strong> button. That\u2019s all with this function. You may not physically see the changes with your eyes, but they will be there.<\/p>\n The last step, as you prepare photos for engraving, is to convert them to black and white images. To turn the photo to black and white, select the picture. With the photo selected, click on Bitmap<\/em><\/strong> and in the dropdown list select Mode<\/em><\/strong> and then Black & White (1-bit) t<\/em><\/strong>o open the palette.<\/p>\n Black White Palette<\/p><\/div>\n In the palette, you will see different types of conversion methods. These include Line Art, Ordered, Jarvis, Stucki, Floyd-Steinberg, Halftone and Cardinality-Distribution<\/em><\/strong>. When engraving a photograph on wood, the Halftone<\/em><\/strong> dithering pattern works best. So select Halftone<\/em><\/strong> as the conversion method. Set the Screen type<\/em><\/strong> as Line<\/em><\/strong> and\u00a0enter the values 0 degrees<\/strong> and 100<\/strong> lines per inch<\/strong> and then click OK<\/strong>.
