Data Backup

What Does Data Backup Mean?

Data backup refers to the process in which copies and archives file to restore in case of data loss. Do you back up your files? Do you back up your website? Have you ever thought about it? Well, you may have thought about it but never took serious steps to safeguard your valuable documents. But let me tell you that, the day you will lose your data either through theft or hard drive crash, you will go mad. Not only that, you will lose all your business at once. Make a data backup now!

Why Is Making a Data Backup Necessary?

When your hard drive fails, when your website host gets a server crash or when your computer gets stolen, and you haven’t made a data backup, you lose everything. Yes, you lose everything that you have accumulated over time. Additionally, it’s not a question of IF your hard drive will fail or IF your host server will crash or IF thieves will steal your laptop, it’s a question of WHEN will it happen. If it has never happened to you yet, you are just lucky. As a preventive measure, be proactive. Make a data backup of all your files and website.

Caution!

If you have a computer and have not backed up your data, know that one day you will lose everything. As to when it will happen is a matter of time. A thief will steal your laptop, or your hard drive will crash. Think about what you could do in such a situation. It’s so bad that I wouldn’t like anyone to fall prey to it. Experience is the best teacher. I am talking about what has happened to me. I know the pain one goes through if no data backup is available. You lose everything. You lose valuable information that you can never recover without a data backup. My friend, be proactive and back up your files.

What About a Website..?

If you have a website and you have never thought of backing it up, you are in a worse situation than the one with mere data on a computer. Just think about being in a case when your host server gets crashed, what will you do without a website backup? Completely nothing! You lose the site and the business. As a business person, never think that your hosting company will make a data backup for your website. Many web hosts do not take the responsibility of backing up your files. If you don’t want to lose your business through such eventualities, back up your website other than relying on your host.

Get the Facts…!

Before going into the details, let me share with you some facts to put you in the larger picture of what I mean. The proven facts are that:

1. All hard drives will crash during their lifetime.

2. Thieves steal a laptop every 53 seconds.

3. Stolen laptops are over 1 out of 10 in their lifetime.

4. Every year 46% of computer users lose their data.

5. 50% of the hard drives will crash within five years.

6. 89% of computer users do not back up their data regularly.

7. 90% of the businesses that lose their data go out of business within two years.

8. 70% of the companies go out of business after a significant data loss.

How Do You Then Make a Data Backup?

There are many ways of making a data bank of your files and your website.  But let me focus on two methods I have found to be so helpful and user-friendly. The two approaches are all automated. The first one is used to make a data backup of all the files on your computer automatically. The second method is used to create a data backup of your WordPress website/blog.

Automatic Backup

If you want to back up your files on your computer automatically, you will have to use JustCloud.com. To access the JustCloud.com service, you will have to create an account with them.  Pay a monthly subscription ranging from $4.49 to $9.95 per month, depending on the data backup package (dependent upon the storage size) you select. Data backup is automatically done every day provided you have access to the internet.

You can access your files any time and from any computer from any part of the world by logging into your online control panel provided to you upon opening an account with them. This method will help you to have a full data backup for all your lifetime photos, files, music, and access them from any computer or mobile device.

WordPress Website Backup

To back up your WordPress website or blog, go to wordpress.org/extend/plugins/backupwordpress/ to download a WordPress Data Backup Plugin that is compatible with the WordPress version you are using. Save it on your desktop or any other preferred location. After downloading the data backup plugin, log into your WordPress Blog Dashboard. Click on “Add New” located under the “Plugins” dropdown menu to go to a page where you will “upload” your downloaded Plugin. This plugin is a free service where you do not have to pay any cent.

After successfully uploading the Plugin, you have to activate it. Make your customised settings as per the straightforward setup guide. You can choose to either back up the database, the file system or both. There are three options for you to choose from:

1. Generate a full backup and send it to an online Data Backup for WordPress Vault (for which you have to open an account)

2. Create a full backup and download it to your computer.

3. Generate a full backup and send it to a specified email address.

Conclusion

If you back up your data and site using the above two methods, you will be 100% secure with your information. You will no longer be worried about the loss of your information and business. The onus is on you now to consider making a data backup of your files and website/blog as soon as possible to avoid losing your lifetime data.
