More and more people are getting into work-at-home business ventures these days. It’s the real trend taken worldwide. If you look around within your locality, you will notice that there are men and women who earn a living by working at home. They provide an income for their families without having to commute daily.
Around the world I have discovered the following statistics on work-at-home business ventures:
• In UK, about 4.2 million people were working from home at the beginning of 2014, representing 13.9% of the total workforce.
• In USA, every 11 seconds someone starts a home business. 70% of the work-at-home business ventures last over a 3-year period compared to 29% of the other business start-ups.
• In Uganda, 85% of the population of 42.9 million lives in rural areas. They depend mainly on subsistence farming. An increasing number of them are getting into commercial farming as their work-at-home business venture. A few people who live in urban areas are getting more and more into working from home to earn a living.
As a work-at-home business advocate, I have noticed that working from home has challenges. Success in home businesses requires a lot of motivation, having the right mindset and determination. There are always obstacles that come up. You have to be determined to overcome them. You must be willing and able to handle them in the best way possible if you want to succeed. Planning ahead of time and applying some proven strategies will help you to make your work-at-home business venture more rewarding.
What does it take to become successful in a work-at-home business venture?
The work-at-home business lifestyle attracts many people. Why? Because it is simple with a long list of perceived benefits. You don’t have to commute. Secondly, you don’t have to worry about the traffic jam. Thirdly, you also don’t worry about hiring business space. Fourthly, you don’t have to sit for long hours in a cubicle. You simply wake up and get to your work, isn’t it?
That’s what many people visualize the work-at-home business life is. Yes, that’s what it is. But in reality, you have to possess certain special qualities in order to become successful in your business.
There are basically three must-have qualities of the work-at-home business person. They include:
- Self motivation
- Being organized
Self motivation is Important in a Work-at-home Business
Self motivation is a must-have quality when considering starting any work-at-home business venture. As a home business person, you need to be a self-starter. You must have the motivation to push yourself forward. Nobody tells you what to do. You don’t have a boss to supervise you and your activities. The onus is on you to make some effort to decide what needs to be done. You have to plan by yourself. And you have to create deadlines for yourself.
Self motivation acts as a catalyst to take your work-at-home business to another level. It helps you to create a list of both short-term and long-term goals. These help you to have a good idea of where you want to go with your home business. By having your goals, you keep yourself aware of what you need to achieve. You keep yourself working towards something that is going to move your business forward.
Flexibility is a must-have quality mainly with people who have children to take care of. If you have small children around, you may be required from time to time to change your working schedule. Issues crop up unexpectedly. Those issues may mess with your working hours. They may cause you to work either short hours or long hours. At times, you may work late at night or very early in the morning. You must be willing and able to create time anytime of the day to make things happen. When you go into the work-at-home business venture knowing that you need to be flexible with your working schedule, it becomes much easier to adapt to that kind of lifestyle.
It’s always said that the future is for those who are organized. It’s true of the work-at-home business people. You must possess some organizational skills in order to succeed in your business. This can be a real challenge especially if there are small children in the house. When life feels like it is constantly in disarray you won’t be focused on the work you need to get done. Although your workplace doesn’t need to be perfect, it is a good idea to have a dedicated space with files and other business documents. This helps you to increase productivity throughout the day as well.
Working from home is not as simple as most people perceive it. It requires a lot of discipline, hard work and sacrifice. Not everyone can manage this kind of life. You have to be with a clear idea of why you want to start a work-at-home business and why you want to live this type of lifestyle. Once you are clear about it, it then becomes much easier to concentrate on what it takes to succeed in your home based business. People who succeed in home businesses are self-driven, organized and flexible.
