Our engraving business depends significantly on other companies. We buy materials like Perspex, rubber, paper, wood sheets, plastics and many others from which we produce finished products from local suppliers. What I’ve noticed is that some Ugandan business people don’t make it easy for people to buy from them. Probably, that’s one reason why they fail to succeed in business.
For example, I have seen business people who behave in a way as if they don’t want to sell to you. When you go to their shops and find them busy on their phones, they can only pay attention to you after a while. Sometimes, they call their employees to attend to you even if they’re not nearby.
I have also seen judgmental business persons. When you enter their shops, they look at you from head to feet, trying to figure out whether you have money to buy or not. If their mind tells them that you’re not a serious customer, they shift the attention from you to other things.
If you are a success-oriented business person, it’s essential to learn how to make it easy for people to buy from you. Some mannerisms, unwelcoming looks and lack of attention could be some of the few things that turn away your customers. In a world where competition is so rampant, it’s difficult to maintain yourself in business if you don’t change your ways of doing business.
It’s so important to learn how to provide an enjoyable, pleasant and straightforward experience for your customer. That’s when you will build your brand identity to command a large share of the market and to beat your competition as well. To do this, you need to learn how to connect with your customers for them to buy from you.
Why is it essential to make it easy for people to buy from you?
As already said, to survive falling out of business due to competition, you have to make it quite easy for your customers to buy from you. Know that people are busier today than they were long ago. They have no time to wait. If something doesn’t hit their eyes in a few seconds of coming into contact with you, they may not want to make an effort to interact with you further.
The more comfortable you make it, the more business you are likely to get. The tighter you make it for people to do business with you, the more business you risk losing. But you are in business to make money. You want to progress and become successful. Why then do you pick on behaviours that chase away customers? Why again, do you make it difficult for them to do business with you? Probably, you didn’t know, and this post is for you to learn better ways of doing business.
How do you make it simple for people to buy from you?
It’s what we want you to learn in this post. Before I answer this question, let me first tell you that the onus is on you to keep a keen eye on your business to see it through the customers’ perspective. It is easy to get buried into the detail of the day-to-day running of your business, and you forget to take a step back. You always need to keep asking yourself the question “How can we make it even easier for customers to buy from us?”
That said, the following are some of the different ways you need to consider to make it simple for people to buy from you.
#1 – Improve your communication with customers
Most people fail to do business with others due to their poor communication skills. Communication consists of both verbal and non-verbal conveyance of messages to your customers. For instance, not attending quickly to a customer just because you’re busy on your phone is a non-verbal communication that leads a client to perceive you negatively.
It’s essential to use a customer-friendly language free of jargons and too much detail. If you have other people selling your products or services, make sure they can communicate the value of your products and services.
#2 – Do not give customers too much freedom to choose
Most Ugandan business people fall prey to this mistake. When customers come to you, and you give them too much choice, it becomes overwhelming to them, and they end up failing to make a decision. Giving too many options makes customers avoid choosing. For instance, people buy more when you give them four rather than 20 options.
#3 – Keep paperwork to the minimum
Wrapping yourself in too much paperwork makes it difficult for you to attend to customers. Secondly, giving many papers to customers to sign makes life difficult for them and could be one of the reasons why they may opt not to come to you for repeat business. Although paperwork is vital in any transaction, you should keep it to the minimum to shorten the steps in your sales process. Spend more time with customers, not with paperwork!
#4 – Let what you sell be obvious
You know what you sell, but what about your customers? Do they know it? Many times people fall into the trap of not stating what is straightforward because it is evident to them. Yes, you know what you are selling, and you also know what you expect. What may seem apparent to you may be confusing to customers.
#5 – Keep your customers informed clearly
When you keep your customers informed, it means you focus on them. You show them that they are valuable, and you do what it takes to keep them with your business.
Secondly, when you keep your customers informed, it reminds them that you are there. It helps you to maintain trusting relationships with them.
Thirdly, people are lazy. They don’t want to spend time doing something they don’t have to. And because of that, you cannot rely on them looking for information. If you don’t, for example, work on public holidays, you need to inform them.
Fourthly, informing customers about a problem is much better than them finding out on their own. For instance, most people who buy our office stamps don’t know how to maintain a rubber stamp. They don’t know that they have to replace a pad. So telling them how and when to replace a pad helps you to continue doing business with them.
#6 – Let all your promotional materials have contact details
Failure to put contact details on your promotional materials makes it difficult for potential customers to find you.
#7 – Design a website that is easy to navigate
Navigation is a method in which your site visitors explore and move around the website. It helps the user in finding the information they want before they can make a call to action.
#8 – Make sure there is access to all the vital information needed to make buying decisions.
Customer education is so crucial for your customers to learn more about your products and services so that they buy from an informed point of view.
The above action points, if taken seriously, can help you to make it easy for customers to buy from you. Your challenge now is to keep a perspective on your business so that you keep seeing it through the customers’ eyes to enable you to improve.
